Change law to allow
Right Turn on Red after Yield
The solution to the Red Light camera problem is to
change state law to allow right turn on red after
yield. The law should allow you to turn right on
red after yielding to other traffic and pedestrians,
rather than after making a complete stop.
It's what we
do now, anyway, with complete safety.
When municipalities write tickets for supposedly
running a red light when turning right on red, they use
as their excuse that the law requires a complete stop.
OK, change the damn law.
And I know just the guy to do it, too.
Do you remember that story
I wrote on June 7th, entitled
Solution to the Red Light Camera Scam ? I suggested
that Red Light camera tickets be limited to ten dollars.
I've now come up with a way to reduce that amount to
zero. Change the law to allow a right turn on red after
yielding.
Years ago, red lights meant, "Stop, and don't go
until the light turns green." We changed that law to
allow a right turn on red after stopping.
We should now change that law, again. This time, we
should allow a right turn on red after yielding, because
that has become the norm for people who are driving in a
perfectly safe manner.
In that June 7th
piece which I wrote, I said that
State Senator Dan Duffy (R-26, Barrington) had
complained about red light cameras being used by
municipalities as ATM machines to shake down motorists,
and that we need a solution to that problem.

Senator Dan Duffy
Senator Duffy, sponsor my
legislative proposal. Amend the Illinois Compiled
Statutes at 625
ILCS 5/11-306(c)3, the right turn on red light law,
to allow right turn on red after yield.
I even have a name for it: Call it the Rob Sherman
Right-Turn on Red Law.
I'm going to call Senator Duffy, later today, and ask
him to draft the legislation, sponsor it and get it
filed.
I'll let you know what he says.
