Federal Court Rules "Under God" in Pledge Unconstitutional

Fifteen years ago, Vice President George Bush told me personally, during a news conference that I attended, that atheists should not be regarded as citizens, nor should they be regarded as patriotic, because "This is one nation under God."  Today, the federal appeals court that covers California refuted that mistaken notion by ruling that the inclusion of that anti-atheistic phrase in the Pledge of Allegiance is unconstitutional.

In so doing, the 9th Circuit's ruling indicated that the time has come for the government to stop engaging in and fomenting religious harassment against atheists.

This decision also bodes well for the Rob Sherman Advocacy project to get the national motto changed from "In God We Trust" to "United We Stand," a motto that we can all subscribe to.

During the day, today, I've been on two nationwide radio shows (The Michael Medved Show and The Dick Staub Show) to discuss this development, and I've been interviewed by the Chicago Sun-Times, the Daily Herald and the News-Sun.  Look for those print interviews tomorrow.
