"Fighting injustice, one victory at a time."
Here's a description of several projects that I'll be pursuing during the coming days. I ask for your financial support to enable me to do this work. Some projects are big, some are small. Some are local, some are national.
Sales Tax Project: Article VIII, Section 1 of the Illinois Constitution states: "Public funds, property or credit shall be used only for public purposes." All states and the federal government operate on the same principle. Many communities, however, have begun the practice of using their sales tax revenue as a bribe to private businesses to locate in their town. The way the scam works is that a community offers to divide the sales tax revenue generated by a business that moves into town and "share" a portion of the tax revenue with that company by giving the revenue back to the company instead of putting it into the public treasury. When we pay sales tax at a store, we expect that the money will be used to pay for some public purpose, not to pad the corporate profits of some private company. I will be working to ban the corporate welfare practice of "sharing" of sales taxes with private companies.
Sacred Places Project: Congress and some states want to use tax dollars to pay for the repair and/or maintenance of houses of worship that some politicians regard as historic buildings. These are not buildings that were formerly used for religion but are now public buildings. Rather, these are buildings, such as churches, are private, belong to sectarian denominations and are used for the advancement of religion. This is a free country, and if people want to own a church and pray in one, they have the right to do that, but they don't have the right to send a bill to the rest of us to maintain and repair their houses of worship. Currently, federal legislation is being considered to do that very thing. I will be working to stop that legislation from being enacted.
Recycling System Project: Many communities have recycling programs. In my home town of Buffalo Grove, Illinois, we have curbside recycling using two bins. One bin holds paper and similar, such as cardboard. The other bin holds plastic, metal such as aluminum and tin, and glass. The bins, however, don't have lids, which cause two types of problems. First, recyclable products, such as newspapers, get dislodged from the bin by the wind or other means, scattering the contents throughout the neighborhood. What a mess! Second, when it rains or snows, the paper products get wet, which makes them unusable for recycling. I will be working to get communities to switch to bins that have a cover. Also, when recycling started, people didn't recycle very many products, so the bins were small. Nowadays, people recycle much more product, but the small bins of the 1980's are too small for the larger quantities that people are now recycling. I will be working to get communities to switch to larger bins.
Tail Light Project: There are a growing number of young people who are customizing their cars by purchasing after-market tail light assemblies that are clear, not red. The tail lights, when they are illuminated, are red, but the lenses are clear. Sometimes, such as in poor weather, when it is dark during the day due to cloudiness or around sunrise and sunset, you can't tell whether these cars are coming or going because the tail lights look like the headlights. I will work to get a federal law passed that bans the manufacture, sale and/or use of such headlights.
If you feel, "I wish somebody would do something about these things," but you don't have the time to do it yourself nor the expertise to successfully pursue these issues, then I'm your guy. These projects are time consuming and expensive to pursue. It takes money to pay for communications with decision makers (telephone, computers and postage) and travel to meet with them. I will be able to do this full time in your behalf if you will support my efforts financially. If people like you don't support my efforts financially, then I'll have to pursue a different kind of work to support my family. Then, these kinds of projects probably won't get done because nobody else gets results like I do, if they even take on these issues at all.
