A battle has been taking place in Congress over whether airport screeners should be federal employees or employees of private contractors. Democrats want the workers to be trained employees of the federal government. Republicans want the employees to be minimum wage clerks working for private companies. Here's why:

Federal employees would be members of a federal employees' labor union. The union would ensure that the employees have good wages and good benefits.
Do you know what well-paid union members do with the money that they earn? They donate some of it to the political campaigns of Democrats, because Democrats care about working people.
Do you know what minimum-wage private employees do with the money that they earn? They spend all of it on the necessities of survival. After paying for living expenses, they have no money left over to donate to the political campaigns of Democrats.
The last thing Republicans want to do is generate millions of additional Democratic campaign dollars by voting to create additional well-paid jobs in this country. Republicans don't care if thousands more Americans get murdered in additional terrorist attacks that occur because of inadequate security. All they care about is making sure that they don't create a new pool of workers that earn enough money to have some left over for contributions to the political campaigns of Democrats.
That's why Republicans have never spoken out against shipping our American jobs overseas. They still get their campaign contributions from the wealthy corporate types here that run the companies that use foreign labor, while at the same time, the foreign workers are very unlikely to donate money to political campaigns in this country.
What's been going on with Republicans in Washington regarding airport security has not been about safety. It's been about politics and money. It's been about voting for the system that Republicans know would yield fewer dollars in campaign contributions to Democrats.
We know that the current system of private contractors using minimum wage employees is an ongoing failure. As a travel agent, I won't fly again until the airports are secured by federal agents working security, and I suggest that you not fly until then, either.
