End Halloween Observance

Each year, Liberal News calls for an end to Halloween observance because the American custom of Halloween observance consists of nothing less than making a mockery of the religious practices of members of the Wiccan religion.  This year, there is an additional reason to not insult and ridicule Wiccans.

Halloween is a holy day to adherents of Wicca, a nature-based European religion that dates back about a thousand years.  The male priests in that religion are called warlocks.  The female priestesses are called witches.  To most Americans, the Wicca religion is kind of weird, but that's no reason to have our children ridicule them by running around the neighborhood dressed up like Wiccans, suggesting that people who look like that are scary, and mocking Wiccans by going door to door, begging for food.  I'm sure that your religion is just as weird to Wiccans as their religion is to you.

How do you think Christians in this country would feel if, every year on Easter, Jewish, Islamic and Wiccan children dressed up like Roman Catholic priests and went door to door trying to scare people by saying, "I'm a child molester.  Trick-or-Treat!"

How do you think Sikhs in this country would feel if, every year during Ramadan, Christian and Wiccan children wrapped a towel around their heads and went door to door ridiculing them by saying, "I'm a terrorist.  Trick-or-Treat!"  Would the children even know that Sikh and Islam are different religions?

It's just as wrong for Christian and Jewish kids to run around the neighborhood on Halloween, suggesting that residents should be afraid of them because they are witches, who are the female leaders of the Wicca religion.

This year, there is an additional reason to cease and desist from the despicable American custom of Halloween observance.  Americans have finally begun to take safety and security seriously.  How do you know that the food your kids collect is safe, when most of it came people whose names you don't even know?  Is it worth risking your kids' health for fifty cents worth of free candy that they mooched off of strangers?  Aren't your kids' lives worth more than the fifty cents you'd save by them begging for candy rather than going to the store and buying it from a secure source?

If you don't care about the personal dignity of persons who are different from you, maybe you'll care enough about your kids' welfare to finally recognize that observing Halloween the American way is a really bad idea.
