Another School Bus Without Seatbelts Crashes,
Needlessly Leaving Three More Dead and Dozens Injured

Two children and an adult chaperone were killed on Saturday in Omaha, Nebraska, when their school bus without seatbelts crashed and rolled over.  Of the other 32 passengers aboard, 30 were injured, many critically.  Injuries included many who suffered a broken pelvis, broken backs and at least one broken shoulder.

If you've been following Liberal News and Commentary throughout this year, you know about my campaign to get seat belts on school busses.  If you are new to this site, please take a look at my previous articles about seat belts on school busses.

As usual, now there is a call in Nebraska for seat belts on school busses, now that it's too late for those who died.  The debate includes the usual false claim that the only kind of seat belt available for busses are lap belts, despite the availability of 3-point seat belts for busses, such as this product from Busbelts Development Corp.:

and the claim that "only" nine kids are killed per year as passengers on school busses, while ignoring the fact that thousands are injured, many severely, and the fact that virtually all of the deaths and injuries would have been avoided if the passengers had been wearing 3-point seat belts, instead of the passengers being catapulted through, and sometimes out of, the bus.

The Omaha World-Herald has published a number of stories about this bus crash.

I will continue to push our government leaders to require 3-point seat belts or better (such as the horseshoe-type restraint that protects riders at amusement park thrill rides) on all forms of public transportation but first and foremost on school busses.  Please contact me if you'd like to help me with either your time or your dollars.
