Two Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) "El" (elevated rapid transit) trains collided a mile north of the Loop (downtown) at nine o'clock this morning. Dozens of people were injured because the trains don't have seat belts. According to one passenger quoted in a breaking news story in the internet edition of the Chicago Tribune, "People flew." Injuries included neck, back, ankle, broken nose, cuts and bruises.
It was just three days ago that I strongly urged members of the Illinois House Committee on Transportation and Motor Vehicles to ensure that all newly acquired public transportation vehicles, including all busses and all trains, have three-point seat belts to prevent exactly the kind of thing that happened today in Chicago: the unexpected crash that yields dozens of injuries due to no seat belts.
Meanwhile, in Hawaii, Mitch Kahle and the Hawaiian Citizens for Separation of State and Church led the way for atheist civil rights by stopping a proposal by the Hawaii State Board of Education to teach creationism in the classroom.
