The confirmation hearings begin today on the Ashcroft nomination for US Attorney General. There has been a lot of groups expressing opposition to the nomination, but the exact reasons for opposing him may not be clear.

Here are the two main reasons for opposing the nomination:
First, Ashcroft would use his position as much as he possible could to force all Americans to conform to the rules of his extremist right-wing Christian religious ideology. Ashcroft believes that civil law should be subservient to his religious delusions. Ashcroft would compare our civil laws to his brand of religion and try to find ways to cause the policies of his religion to supercede our civil laws. He would sabotage enforcement of civil laws that conflict with his religious beliefs, rather than enforce those civil laws.
I want an attorney general who will support and defend, without hesitation, the Constitution of the United States and the laws of the land. I don't want an attorney general who will be looking for ways to undermine or sabotage those laws and constitutional provisions which conflict with his religious delusions. There are plenty of religious Republicans, if that's what Duh-bya wants, who would conform their private lives to their religious beliefs, but who would not try to use the AG position to force the rest of us to conform to the religious beliefs of the AG. Ashcroft is not one of them.
Second, it is customary to allow the President of the United States to have the kind of people he wants as cabinet members, because, after all, the majority of the people selected the person who is serving as President, so he has the people's mandate. Here, however, that's not the case at all. Duh-bya was not the choice of the people. He was rejected at the polls, only to have Republicans in all three branches of government conspire together to overrule the will of the people and install their man as president. Don't forget how Republicans from the Executive Branch of Florida and from the Legislative and Judicial Branches in Washington, DC, used every trick and scam to block the count of ballots from Democratic areas until time ran out, and then claim that their man won, not because he got the most votes, but because it was too late to include in the final totals thousands of Democratic votes that were forcibly, intentionally and deliberately excluded by the Republicans until time ran out.
Duh-bya does not have a mandate to govern. He stole the election. He is not the legitimate president. His presidency is fraudulent. Therefore, Duh-bya is not entitled to the assumption that his choices reflect a mandate that would accrue to a legitimate winner. Cabinet nominees from Duh-bya should be especially closely scrutinized because Duh-bya stole the election which he lost at the polls.
The Supreme Court of the United States may have the power to declare that Duh-bya is the President. The Supreme Court, however, does not have the power to attach any legitimacy or credibility to such a declaration.
The presidential imposter was selected over the objections of the majority of American voters. Duh-bya is not the people's choice for president, so his cabinet nominations should not be given any presumption that they reflect the will of the people as expressed by the people's choice for President. Duh-bya is not the people's choice, and Ashcroft certainly isn't even close to being the people's choice.
Therefore, Ashcroft should be rejected by the United States Senate.
