Many -- make that most -- liberal organizations have taken a position strongly opposing the nomination of John Ashcroft as Attorney General.

I join those organizations in encouraging you to contact your senator to oppose the nomination. People for the American Way has put together the Ashcroft Record, so you can quickly learn why Ashcroft is the wrong person for the job.
The liberal organizations ask that you contact your United States Senators and encourage them to vote against Ashcroft's confirmation. The reason for doing so is to help your senators justify a vote against Ashcroft. It would be easier to justify a "No" vote if a senator could say that tens of thousands of constituents contacted his office, and 90% said to vote against Ashcroft.
The problem, however, is finding a convenient, expeditious way to contact your senators. One way is to sign someone else's form letter or petition. A better way is to type your own letter, but deciding on a cogent message can be difficult. Then, getting paper, typing it up, signing it, getting the mailing address of your senator, finding an envelope, finding a stamp (or two, since it takes 34 cents, now), and then getting it into the mail may seem like more trouble than it's worth.
In order to save you the trouble of putting together a project, just to send a message to your senators to oppose the Ashcroft nomination, I've put together a quick, easy and effective plan that you can follow.
Here's the plan:
1. Go to the United States Senate home page.
2. There is a tool right there that will link you to each of your two senators' home pages.
3. On each senator's home page, click on the link for e-mailing the senator.
4. Type this simple eight-word message: Please vote against the Ashcroft nomination. Thank you.
5. Then, type in your name and street address to demonstrate that you are an actual constituent of the senator.
6. Press Send. You're done!
Your letters, one to each of your two senators, do not need to go into any explanation as to why you want your senators to vote against Ashcroft. They know why Ashcroft should be opposed. They just need your endorsement of that opposition. The arguments against Ashcroft are quite well known. Comprehensive research by the liberal groups has been supplied to every senator, so you don't need to struggle to re-create that research on your own.
Besides, your senators will never actually see your letter. What happens is that the senator's staff counts the quantity of letters that they receive in support of and in opposition to Ashcroft. Your senators will only see the totals, so elaborate content with your letter is unnecessary. Al that matters to your senators with respect to letters received from constituents regarding this particular issue is that you indicate your opposition to the nomination.
The eight words at Number 4, above, get the job done. In fact, it will probably take you less time to e-mail each of your senators than it took you to read this message. Please take a minute to send each of your two senators an e-mail message asking them to oppose Ashcroft.
