The first President Bush's anti-atheist bigotry is nothing compared to the anti-atheist bigotry of the second President Bush.
On November 15, 2003, terrorists murdered about 40 women and children at two synagogues in Istanbul, Turkey. President Bush responded with a statement which said, in pertinent part, that the focus of these attacks demonstrates that the enemy in the War on Terror is people without faith. Hey, that's us atheists! I thought the enemy in the War on Terror is people of extreme faith. We atheists don't do jihad.
Mr. Bush's full statement is on the White House web site and can be viewed by clicking here.
President Bush now says that it's appropriate to engage in warrant-less spying on the enemy in the War on Terror. Atheists across the country are left to wonder to what extent Big Brother is snooping on them. Are they going after our phone calls? Our e-mails? Are they tracking our web usage or what books we check out of the library?
I contacted the White House to seek clarification on Mr. Bush's statement, but have gotten no response. I've been in touch with the Executive Office of the President, the Office of Inter-governmental Affairs, the Office of Political Affairs and the Office of Public Liaison, but nobody is willing to respond.
Earlier this year, I met with my friends Democratic Senator Barack Obama and Republican Congressman Mark Kirk to seek their assistance with getting a response out of the White House as to whether or not they still regard atheists as the enemy in the War on Terror. Both members of Congress have high level staffers looking into the matter and trying to get a response out of the White House.
This issue will not go away until I get an answer out of the White House. I will continue to be obstreperous by keeping the pressure on until results are achieved.
